Rv Alucia

Research Vessel Alucia, supporting and facilitating ocean exploration and research

Research Vessel Alucia is a 56 meter research and exploration vessel built to support and facilitate ocean exploration and research. It is owned by Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio who in 2012 founded OCEANX (formerly know as Alucia Productions). This is a nonprofit media company that partners with a variety of leading broadcasters, research institutions, conservation organisations and production companies to chronicle ocean expeditions aboard RV ALUCIA. By facilitating cutting edge research in some of the most unexplored regions of the ocean it highlights awareness on the beauty, complexity and fragility of the ocean and its inhabitants.

Giant Squid

The first ever images of an 8 meter giant squid, Architeuthis, in its natural habitat were captured at a depth of 900 meters, just off the Ogasawara Islands (North Pacific Ocean). Alucia´s manned submersible utilised infrared lights, that are not visible to most sea creatures together with a novel optical lure developed by Dr. Edith Widder. This successfully lured in the giant squid by mimicking the distress calls of a jellyfish.
